Pop Modern
This is a piece from my Up To The Bar series, which is all about getting a glimpse into "The Bar Where All The Jokes Happen"-as in , "So, three dogs walk into a bar...", "So a pig walks into a bar...", etc. The bar in this series is owned by a traditional proprietor: He likes his drink, he likes great art, and he likes his horses and dogs. And like any well-connected restauranteur, he's always got some old photos of himself up on the wall. Usually you'll see shots of him hanging out with some Italian movie star, or other old picturesque friends...In this piece, if you peer in at the black and white photographs from right to left, you'll see him in the middle of a shot with two friends;just to the left there is a picture of his beloved racehorse in action-"Buddy Up"-number seven, who ran in the Kentucky Derby (although he did not win, but it is a great thing to be in it at all); on the far left is a photo of his grandmother, one of the original owners of the bar, with her own old English bulldog, the original Buddy Up To The Bar; just to the right of that shot is a shot of the owners uncle on the left and his grandfather on the right, OR his grandfather on the left, and his uncle on the right-I've never been quite sure. But we all have some old ambiguous photos in the family album like that, right? And the fact that the bartenders are only five or six inches tall is completely incidental to the piece, has absolutely nothing to do with the plot whatsoever.
