"Coney Island Melody"

While researching Coney Island, I began to see a surf Avenue scene including Nathan's, some sweet little old-time ice cream and candy shoppe, and an antique store with some old New York /Coney Island/Brighton paraphanelia in the window as a start. At one point, I came up on an ad from the early 1900s for a beautiful Victorola, and it said "Type DL Talking Machine: Will Bring Any Disc to LIFE!" and I thought, Wow, that's a pretty hefty promise. What if it really did?

So, in my painting "Coney Island Melody", what's happening is the heavy set guy on the bottom right owns this antique store on the historic surf Avenue, where he likes to sit on the street and watch the people go by. Just above his head is a poster for this old Victorola he's just acquire, callad a "Talking Machine", and the ad promises to "Bring Any Disc to LIFE." So the guy's sitting next to his box of old LPs and 45s for sale, and decides to put the promise to the test. He puts on a record called "Coney Island Sounds" (you can see the empty red and yellow album cover by his foot), and sure enough, the old Victorola brings the magical, nostalgic carnival sounds to life, and the old, beloved Coney Island of the early and mid-20th century starts rising up behind and above surf avenue as it plays.
