Pop Modern
East Village Opera New Release 2007.....a professionally trained opera singer Amy Nelder has also performed as a POP singer opening once for Ray Charles.
So, Puccini and Mozart decided to open dueling cafes in the East Village. So, now they are restaraunteurs, and as you can imagine, they are both real micromanagers. But of course, they'll always be musicians at heart. And every once in awhile, they decide to come out and rework an old piece, or maybe collaborate on a new one. Fortunately for them, if they want to rehearse a new piece or just play around with a tune, all the characters from their most famous operas just happen to live in the apartments upstairs, and they'll come out and sing.
So what you are witnessing here is sort of an “Operatic Jam Session”. So you might see lead characters from Nozze di Figaro doing some duet with a lead from La Boheme, and other famous figures booming out the chorus, just having a grand old time. And if they’re lucky, some musicians will just happen to be strolling by to join in on the accompaniment, taking a beak from some other local performance. But no worry, if no one’s there, the little lady who has the French antique store in the bottom left corner has amazing things, one of which is an old Victorola that will play all the missing instruments!
Notice the Valkyrie in the upper left window? She’s waiting to join in on the fun, but as she was written be Wagner and not Puccini or Mozart, there are only certain times a week she is allowed to sing. As everyone knows, the streets of New York have strict regulations on everything, as you can please look closely and see on the far right street sign: “Special Night Regulations” : Coloraturas may only sing at certain times, no horns except percussion, 24 hour parking for singers…” There are many other little opera moments happening in the piece as well, but not all are singing. Madame Butterfly is picking up her dry cleaning…
And the little old man on the park bench next to Puccini, he lives right there, is taking a nap. And every once in awhile, if things get too loud, a soprano wakes him up, and he cracks open an eye, looks around at all this scene, and thinks to himself, Oh, I’m having the same dream again-and goes back to sleep”.
