Most of the original Northern New Mexican Retablos were modeled after print engravings. Since the land was so remote from Mexico City not many of the baroque style paintings made the trip if any at all. So local artisans had to take the task of creating the art, under their own hands. I did this piece in a faux print engraving style to explore what something might have looked like if the norteños had access to print making. This piece is called “Ancestor” it hints toward the truth of what our New Mexican ancestors probably looked like. Rather than the romantic full bred conquistador idea. After all Oñate himself was born in Zacatecas,Mexico to the great granddaughter of the Aztec Emperor Montezuma. But the real smoking gun is that when the Pueblo Revolution(revolt) happened in 1680 kicking out all the colonizers most of those original families did not return to New Mexico for the reconquest of 1692. So many people of lesser means took the risk instead, motivated by the lure of owning land for themselves, including many mixed blood from Zacatecas. But your ancestors are probably just the pure bred nobility right?
