Original study for 2007 New Release "Women of The World".
I read in a book* about some of these beautiful vintage 19th century and early 20th century posters featuring women - caressing, presenting or otherwise interacting with various liqueurs, automobiles and other products – that you could really study the history of women’s empowerment and independence through the activities in the posters. For instance, while the image of two women riding in a car by themselves is neither shocking nor inspirational today, in the year 1903 it had a completely different connotation.
My series called “Women of the World” is about just that naissance of independence. In the painting, “Women of the World II” (20x60”), the ladies in the posters on the café wall to the far left have just realized a freedom they have never known. They’ve broken free from their frames and are proceeding to interact with the greater world. As they move on down the sidewalk exploring the scene around them, their self-determination inspires and ignites characters in other posters and paintings to experience the thrill of jumping from their respective landscapes as well.
The paintings in this series are meant not only to celebrate and commemorate the strides of women in the past 120 or so years, but also to inspire others who need it to experience the thrill of freedom, to step outside the frame.
