Diego Lukezic
Tangodog© Story

Twenty-three years ago, Diego Lukezic was a young boy living in Buenos Aires Argentina, the homeland to Tango music. During the winter, when the city was gray, cold and frosty, Diego and his mother would walk to the outdoor market, one block from the market was "TangoMan" he wore a coat and a black hat that covered his face. He sat on a wooden crate with his Bandoneon (a tango music instrument) on his lap.
He played beautiful music for coins. Sitting next to him was his dog "Tango"; he was a mixed breed, white with black spots. This little dog was Diego’s favorite part about going to the market. Each trip Diego would ask his mother for some change to tip the Tango Man, using this as an excuse to play with Tangodog. This happened every day for several years. Everything was perfect until his family moved to another
neighborhood in Buenos Aires.

Diego missed Tango terribly; he knew that Tango missed him too. Diego could not forget the expression in Tangodog’s eyes as he walked away, the last day in the old neighborhood. This is when Diego began to draw Tango dog.

Many years went by...
One day after school, Diego went to visit his Grandmother, near his old neighborhood. As Diego crossed a street, a man who wore a hat that tilted onto his face caught his eye. Diego knew it was the TangoMan.
Diego ran to him and asked, "Where is Tango, your dog?" With a frown TangoMan replied, "He is dead and so is my music."

Diego responded,” He is dead for you, but not for me, he will live forever in my drawings.”

For Diego Tangodog will live eternally in his paintings...

Its now about the adventure that Tango is on as he lives vicariously through Diego's work. From under water excursions, to safari, skiing, surfing, sunsets with a friend or starry skies. Living the high life in New Orleans or Santa Fe with fine wine or a dirty martini...Diego & Tango are enjoying life together, now and always.

Diego & Valerie came to Santa Fe after Katrina-opened their studio on Canyon Road and began yet another adventure. Luminarias, snow fall and amazing skies gave Diego new subject matter and the art flourished in spite of the recent despair that brought them here.

Two years have passed and the city that embraced the young couple waves a sad goodbye as they return home to New Orleans. For our family and POP Gallery they will be missed but we are grateful for our new friendship. We will take great care of Tango in his new home on Water Street.

Our son Rowan has a special connection to Tango and believes that "he will 'tector me"...so he hangs by his bed and throughout our home. Diego has given Tango to the world and we all feel a little safer and happier just to be part of the Tango experience that will always be.
